MYTHS
Protein Myth # All proteins are the same.
Bread and vegetables are both carbohydrates; does that mean you can eat bread and save money on the vegetables? Is it indifferent whether you eat fish or red meat?
If you think so, there is absolutely something you need to learn about nutrition!
(Take a look at the ‘Experts Say’-section about mixing it up and getting protein from different sources. No proteins have all 20 amino acids; that’s why variation is key).
Proteins are divided in 20 different amino acids. 8 of them are essential – that means; your body can’t produce them itself and therefore you have to get them from your food.
Protein foods are built up differently and contain different amounts of amino acids, fats and carbohydrates.
Now, lets take an example with cars: Both a Fiat and a Ferrari have what it takes to be called “a car”. Does that term make them the same thing? Of course not! Not only is a Ferrari faster; it also gives you a completely different driving sensation and pleasure. And of course; the price is different too!
It’s the same with protein shots vs. traditional proteins. A protein shot is faster (because it’s not filled with extra baggage); you will enjoy the journey while it lasts; you will give your body the best it can get and you’ll be proud of showing others that you care about quality.
Some proteins are “cleaner” than others as a result of the filtration process. The most “dirty” proteins are those who have the least careful filtration, they are called protein concentrates. The key to quality lies in the type of raw materials being used, the filtration technique and the combination of the formula.
You get what you pay for in most circumstances. “Quality” and “Cheap” does not match (it’s just a cheap selling technique). Watch out for proteins that have been sent off to sale before they managed to get through the whole filtration-process.
“It is as unwise to pay too much as it is to pay too little and risk quality and value” – Johnny Reb
Protein Myth # You can get your proteins from milk/meat/beans, etc.
Sure, you can get your proteins from meat, milk, beans, etc – and variation and moderation is always key! But the great thing about protein shots is that they only provide you with pure protein and not loads of extra carbs, lactose, fat, etc.
You don’t get the extra fat you get from meat; you don’t get all that carbs and starch from beans; and you don’t get all the extras from traditional protein powder that should have been filtered (lactose, carbs, fat, or even animal bones!)
Besides, if you read the ‘Experts Say’-section, you’ll find 5 Quick Tips from Harvard School of Public Helath. Some of those tips are; God low on saturated fat, limit red meat, avoid processed meat, eat soy in moderation. A protein shot is free of all those things that can possibly damage your body and your health.
Let’s take a look at something like milk:
Would you drink lemon-beverages to satisfy your C-vitamin needs?
Sure you’ll get some c-vitamins, but what about all the sugar you’ll stuff yourself with?
Of course you can drink milk and get some proteins from that. But just remember that you’ll not only get proteins; you’ll also get lactose (milk sugar), carbs (most of milk is carbs, not protein) and even fat. Besides, as mentioned above, not all protein foods contain all 20 amino acids.
The great thing about a protein shot is that it is all about protein – and nothing else. So if you just want proteins and all the benefits from protein – take a protein shot. A protein shot is about protein – and nothing else (no carbs, no lactose, no sugar, no fat).
Facts:
* There is only 4 grams of proteins (per 100 gram) in milk.
* The pasteurization-process and heat treatment the milk has been through have affected the value of those few grams of protein.
* You will not get those 4 grams of protein without getting 10 grams of carbohydrates as well (and in that 10 grams of carbs you’ll find lots of lactose – not your stomachs best friend).
* Most of what you’ll get in milk is lactose. Lactose is milk sugar, and a growing number of people have problems digesting lactose, so they end up getting stomachaches and being bloated. If you’re lucky you’ll only get oedema. The recent years the numbers of people who are lactose intolerant have grown!
* You’ll also get saturated fat from milk, depending on the milk type. Saturated fat is the fat type your body needs the Least – because you already have plenty of it. What you need is omega 3 and 6.
* Some dairy products are filled with sugar, which you absolutely don’t need either.
In a protein shots the protein amount is at least 87 grams per 100 grams (remember it was only 4 in milk!). The proteins you’ll find there have high value, because they haven’t been ruined by pasteurization or heat-treatment. Besides that you’ll not get carbohydrates, fat, sugar or lactose! That is incomparable with milk.

Protein Myth # You are already getting enough protein from your daily meals.
Yes, you are getting proteins, but are you getting all 20 amino acids – and all 8 essential amino acids?
This goes back to “all proteins are the same”. Can you eat 10 apples and say you have satisfied your body’s need for vitamins? If you think so, you must have slept through your biology lessons!
Protein Myth # Protein is for men.
So salads and vitamins are for women?
If you really believe that, you are preventing yourself from living a healthy and balanced life in a healthy and balanced body.
Whether you’re a woman or man, your entire body is build up by protein. The most important function of protein is to build up, keep up, and replace the tissues in your body – whether the tissue is your skin, hair, nails, blood, organs, bones, enzymes, immune system, muscles, etc.

Protein Myth # Women will get big muscles from protein.
Protein itself doesn’t build muscles. To build muscles you need both proteins and workout.
An increased muscle mass will only help women loose fat and get fit (and sexy). A higher muscle mass gives a higher metabolism. Who doesn’t want a higher metabolism?
So women will actually just get toned and trimmed with protein and muscle workout. Women don’t have men’s hormones (and thankfully men don’t have ours); so women can never turn into men (and those who look like men ARE taking male hormones!).
Women are not physiological disposal to getting big muscles from muscle training and proteins, because they do not have the male hormone testosterone. Without that hormone it is a battle to get big muscles! And those women who have big muscles are either working out a lot more than you would ever dream of, or they are using drugs. And some women just claim to be “muscular”, but in reality it is fat – as in “I’m just big-boned…”
If you want to get slim and trimmed with proteins and muscle workout, it is important to give your muscles something to work with, or else there will be nothing to build. And if there is nothing to build there will not be any increase in your metabolism either.
Protein Myth # You have to do workout to get any advantage from protein.
